1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Biological effect of abutment material on the stability of peri‐implant marginal bone levels. Systematic review and meta‐analysis
2 CONSENSUS STATEMENTS
2.1 Which abutment materials have been used in clinical studies?
2.2 What is the effect of abutment materials on marginal bone loss?
Based on 15 clinical trials (11 RCTs and four CCTs), no statistically significant mean differences in marginal bone loss were encountered when comparing abutment materials (alumina, gold, titanium nitride or zirconia) with titanium [WMD = 0.034]. In the same way, no significant differences were observed for any of the included individual comparisons. However, all individually tested materials [zirconia (n = 17), alumina (n = 5), gold (n = 4), titanium nitride (n = 2), lithium disilicate (n = 2), zirconia + alumina (n = 1),] demonstrated a mean marginal bone loss over time of 0.26 mm; (29.8 months, range: 6–86 months).
2.3 What is the effect of abutment materials on implant survival?
2.4 What is the effect of abutment material on peri‐implant diagnostic parameters?
2.5 What is the effect of abutment material on aesthetics?
2.6 What is the effect of abutment material on complications?
2.7 What is the effect of new abutment materials on PROMs?
3 CONCLUSIONS
Based on the present systematic review, the tested abutment materials can be considered appropriate for clinical use according to the observation period studied (mean 3.5 years).
4 CLINICAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Titanium has been the standard abutment material for many years and has been associated with stable marginal bone levels, high implant survival rates, healthy peri‐implant tissues and a limited number of technical and biological complications. Therefore, titanium should
